North Carolina Conference on Aging Update: Deadlines Approaching

Thinking about attending the 9th North Carolina Conference On Aging? The Conference web site contains all the information you need to plan an enriching conference experience to enhance your expertise in aging policy, research and best practices. Final abstracts are online for workshops, papers, symposia, roundtable discussions and posters in the Conference tracks: Family, Caregiving, Grandparenting and More; Economics of Aging; Health and the Continuum of Care; Healthy Aging & Active Engagement; Planning Livable Senior Friendly Communities; Diversity and Aging; and Safe Communities. The reservation deadline for the hotel block room rate is September 24th, or earlier if the room block fills before that date. The registration deadline to avoid late fees is September 27th.

Time Set For Fall 2011 IOA Seminars

Beginning September 19, 2011, the UNC Institute on Aging Seminar Series for Fall 2011 will be held Mondays from 3:30-5:00 pm at the UNC Institute on Aging, 720 MLK Jr. Blvd., 2nd floor conference room, Chapel Hill. A list of dates, speakers and topics will be published on the Seminar Series web page by September 12.

Students Mentored At IOA Successfully Defend Dissertations

Janette Dill, formerly a predoctoral fellow in the IOA's Carolina Program in Health and Aging Research (CPHAR), has successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in the Sociology Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The title of her dissertation is: "Jobs or Careers?: Mobility among Low-Wage Workers in Healthcare Organizations." IOA Senior Scientist Victor Marshall was her CPHAR mentor and dissertation co-advisor. As of September, 2011, Dr. Dill is a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award postdoctoral fellow at UNC's Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research.
Rebecca Matteo has successfully defended her doctoral dissertation, “The Economic Consequences of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in Clients of Veterans Affairs Canada”. Her supervisor was IOA Senior Scientist Victor Marshall. Her dissertation, a culmination of research undertaken in partnership between the UNC Institute on Aging and Veterans Affairs Canada, explores the financial consequence of PTSD to more specifically identify the economic vulnerabilities of this group of veterans. Other members of her dissertation committee are: Glen Elder, UNC Professor of Sociology and Fellow of the Carolina Population Center; Jon Oberlander, UNC Professor of Social Medicine and Health Policy and Administration; David Pedlar, Research Director of Veterans Affairs Canada; and Mike Shanahan, UNC Professor of Sociology. Dr. Matteo will continue her research as a Health Science Specialist with the National Center for PTSD, Executive Branch, in White River Junction, Vermont.

Becky Hunter Named An IOA Senior Scientist

Rebecca Hunter, M.Ed., is now a Senior Scientist at the Institute On Aging, where she is engaged in healthy aging initiatives. Read her bio sketch.

Gerontological And Geriatric Nursing News At UNC Chapel Hill

Dr. Mary H. Palmer, IOA Interim Co-Director and UNC Professor of Nursing, presented at the American Urological Association Foundation Summer Research Conference in Linthicum, Maryland on July 17, 2011 on the topic: "Multidisciplinary Geriatric Urology Research: Urinary Incontinence as Exemplar".
Dr. Palmer is mentoring two visiting international scholars at the UNC School of Nursing. Dr. Sunah Park from Chung-Ang University in Korea researches gerontology and the image of nursing. I Lee, RN, MSN, instructor in the Nursing Department, I-Shou University, Yanchao Campus, Taiwan, is a doctoral student with an interest in the quality of care in nursing homes.
Anna Beeber, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor of Nursing, has been named a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar for her research project, "Developing Best Nursing Practices in Assisted Living". Read more.

IOA Centralizes Business Operations In August: NC*Aging Newsletter Becomes Quarterly

As part of the extensive budget reductions felt throughout the University, and statewide, effective August 1, 2011, the IOA consolidated its business operations with those of the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. The action took place without laying off staff. The Sheps Center Business Office will provide business office support, human resources support, facilities support, and pre and post grant management support for the staff and researchers at the IOA.
As part of the IOA's operational changes, the NC*Aging newsletter will shift to a quarterly publication schedule, with the next issue scheduled for December, 2011.

UNCG Gerontology Research Network "Lunch & Learn" Meetings Scheduled

The UNC-Greensboro Gerontology Research Network will hold lunch and learn meetings on September 21 and October 27, each from noon to 1pm in the Elliott University Center Dogwood Room. September's speaker will be Staton Noel, who is pursuing a dual MBA/MS in gerontology, on development and marketing of products to benefit an aging society. Celebrating Falls Prevention Awareness Week in September. Governor Beverly Perdue has proclaimed the week of September 19-24, 2011 (the first week of Fall) as Falls Prevention Awareness Week. Nationwide, 43 states will observe Falls Prevention Awareness Day on September 23. To recognize falls prevention awareness activities, the UNC Institute on Aging (IOA) would like to highlight the work of the North Carolina Falls Prevention Coalition. The IOA is a founding partner of the NC FPC, along with the North Carolina Division of Public Health, North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services, and the Carolina Geriatric Education Center. One of the key activities of the Coalition is bringing together many different agencies to work on the issue of falls. Since its formation in 2008, the Coalition has grown to become a multi-disciplinary group comprised of key leaders from over 70 organizations across the state. Read more...
