IOA SCSEP Employees Recognized During Older Americans Month
In celebration of Older Americans Month, the Institute on Aging salutes its three Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) employees. SCSEP is a federally-funded program that enhances employment opportunities for unemployed older Americans and promotes them as a solution for businesses seeking trained, qualified, and reliable employees. Nomination Deadline For DeFriese Awards Extended To June 30
The UNC Institute on Aging is currently accepting nominations for the 2011 Gordon H. DeFriese Career Development in Aging Research Awards, honoring Dr. DeFriese's thirty-year distinguished career in the conduct and development of research to improve the quality of lives of older North Carolinians, and his commitment to developing and supporting the careers of his colleagues at UNC-Chapel Hill. Three awards, one for junior faculty/ staff, and two for doctoral students, will be given in the summer of 2011. Two IOA Scientists Receive Grants
Mary Altpeter, UNC Institute on Aging Senior Scientist, has received a two-year $100,000 grant from the Mid Atlantic Arthritis Foundation titled, "Bringing the Arthritis Foundation Walk With
Ease (WWE) Program to the Workplace". An interdisciplinary team also including Leigh Callahan
and Britta Schoster of the Thurston Arthritis Research Center and Laura Linnan of the Dept. of Health Behavior and Health Education will conduct a feasibility study to test how best to deliver and integrate the self-directed format of the WWE program within four small business worksites.

John Scott, UNC Institute on Aging Scientist, has received a grant for the 2011-12 academic year from the Kauffman Foundation, to study entrepreneurship among older Americans.
North Carolina Conference on Aging Update

Dr. Rosemarie Tong, Distinguished Professor of Health Care Ethics, Department of Philosophy, UNC Charlotte. Preprogram and registration materials for this year's conference will be available on the conference website in early June. Programming will feature over 100 separate educational and training opportunities in the form of workshops, papers, roundtables and posters.
Registration fees for the 2011 conference will remain at 2008 levels, with special rates for seniors and full-time students.
Mary Palmer Named A Fellow Of The American Geriatrics Society
Congratulations to Institute on Aging Interim Co-Director Dr. Mary H. Palmer on being named a Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society at its recent meeting in Baltimore!
Dr. Palmer was also part of a panel on Pearls on Publishing in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society at the same meeting, and will present the Thelma Wells Lecture at the 43rd Annual Conference of the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Society meeting in New Orleans in June.

Senior Leaders Program Graduates Class of 2011, Welcomes Class of 2012
On May 24, 2011, the UNC Institute on Aging Senior Leadership Initiative
held a graduation ceremony at the Carol Woods community in Chapel Hill for the six members of the class of 2011.
The featured speaker was Maria Spaulding, Deputy Secretary for Long Term Care and Family Services with the NC Department of Health and Human Services.
The IOA is also pleased to announce the selection of the Senior Leaders class of 2012: Lillian Corprew-Cleveland County; Fran Edwards-Brunswick County; Joyce Lowrimore-Brunswick County; John Thompson-Carteret County; Margaret Towman-Wake County; and Charles Youse-Northampton County.
Special thanks are due to AARP, the NC Association of Area Agencies on Aging and the NC Coalition on Aging for their support of this program.
Highlights of April's Aging Exchange Event
At the 7th Annual Aging Exchange in April 2011, sponsored by the UNC Institute on Aging and nine co-sponsors, UNC Chapel Hill graduate students and faculty presented 27 posters which were judged in four categories. Over 80 guests attended the event, which also included presentation of the Gordon H. DeFriese Career Development in Aging Research Awards, and a keynote address on American Indian aging policy and research by Margaret Moss, PhD, JD, RN, FAAN and Associate Professor and Director of the Nursing Management, Policy and Leadership Specialty, Yale University School of Nursing.

Carolina at Charlotte, received the Hiram J. Friedsam Mentorship Award at the 37th Annual Meeting and Educational
Leadership Conference of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) in March.
Changes In Gerontology Program At ASU
Appalachian State University's graduate program in gerontology has implemented some schedule changes while the Master's Degree curriculum is revamped.
The Master's Degree program has closed admissions for the academic year 2011-2012. Students in the Graduate Certificate program will still be able to transfer Graduate Certificate courses, all of which will be required in the new Master’s Degree, into that program when it re-opens. Pioneer Network, a national a center for all stakeholders in the field of aging and long term care whose focus is on providing home and community for elders,
