The Aging Exchange Is Coming Up In April; Submit Poster Abstracts By March 18thUNC-Chapel Hill graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, clinical scholars, and faculty with an interest in aging are invited to submit poster abstracts for the 7th Annual Aging Exchange, an event dedicated to recognizing and promoting research in the field of aging at UNC-Chapel Hill. The Exchange will be held on Thursday, April 7th from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Margaret Moss, PhD, Yale University School of Nursing, will present a guest lecture titled, "American Indian Aging Policy and Research." For more information, including the call for posters and submission forms, see the Aging Exchange web page. The deadline to submit a poster abstract is March 18 at 5pm. The Call For Presentations Has Been Issued For The North Carolina Conference on AgingThe Call for Presentations for the 2011 North Carolina Conference on Aging is now available via the Conference web page. The abstract submission deadline is April 22, 2011. This year's conference will take place on October 18-20 at the Hilton Charlotte University Place in Charlotte, NC. Following the very successful 2010 Governor's Conference on Aging, the theme of this year's conference is: "The Community Response: Implementing the Plan for a Livable, Senior Friendly North Carolina". We look forward to having you with us in Charlotte this year! IOA Senior Leadership Initiative Accepting Class of 2012 Applications, Due 4/15/11The Senior Leadership Enhancement Initiative is a program sponsored by the UNC Institute on Aging with support provided by AARP-NC, the NC Association on Aging, and the NC Association of Area Agencies on Aging. The program is open to any person aged sixty and over currently residing in North Carolina. Participants will broaden their understanding of aging in North Carolina, develop their leadership skills through an individualized learning agreement, participate in a leadership project, and participate in training made available through the Institute on Aging. Southern Gerontological Society Meeting Registration OpenRegistration is open and the preliminary program is available for "The New Aging Enterprise", the 32nd annual meeting of the Southern Gerontological Society in Raleigh, April 14-17. The early registration deadline is March 1, and the hotel reservation deadline is March 15. Submit Abstracts For National Aging Meetings By March DeadlinesThere is still time to submit abstracts for the 40th Annual Meeting of the American Aging Association, taking place in Raleigh. The deadline is March 14, 2011. 2010 NC Census Data Slated For ReleaseThis week, the U.S. Census Bureau anticipates releasing local-level 2010 Census population counts for five states including North Carolina. Included will be summaries of population totals, as well as data on race, Hispanic origin and voting age. Read more. Gerontologist Gordon Streib Has Died At 92Dr. Gordon Streib, retired from the University of Florida as a Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of Sociology, died February 17, 2011 at Oak Hammock Continuing Care Retirement Community in Gainesville, FL. A Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, Dr. Streib was a founding member of the Southern Gerontological Society which named its Gordon F. Streib Distinguished Academic Gerontologist Award after him. Read his online obituary. Contributions help fund the various research, education and service activities of the Institute. Volunteer Opportunities With Project CompassionProject Compassion, a Chapel Hill non-profit organization helping to create community and provide innovative support in caregiving, end of life, grief and for people living with serious illness, has openings on its Support Teams and Circles of Care Teams. |
Aging & Health Promotion News Two Upcoming IOA Seminars Focus on Health Promotion ProgrammingOn March 28 and April 25, 2011, the meetings of the UNC Institute on Aging Seminar Series will address health promotion at the program and system levels. In March, Dr. Mary Altpeter, IOA Senior Research Scientist, and Dr. Leigh Callahan of the UNC School of Medicine and Thurston Arthritis Research Center, will discuss their work in revising and evaluating the Arthritis Foundation Walk With Ease Program. On April 25, Audrey Edmisten, NC DAAS Program Lead for the Living Healthy/Chronic Disease Self-management Program, and Sabrena Lea, Director of the NC DHHS Office of Long Term Services and Supports, will present their discussion of Changing Systems, Changing Lives. The seminars take place at the Institute on Aging on from 3:30-5:00pm. New from NC Researchers Researchers from the UNC Institute on Aging (IOA) have produced a special issue of the journal Library Trends, with the theme "Workforce Issues in Library and Information Science, Part 2". Ten of the articles are based on data from the Workforce Issues in Library and Information Studies (WILIS) conducted at the IOA with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). IOA-affiliated authors are Dr. Joanne Gard Marshall, Dr. Victor Marshall, Dr. Jennifer Craft Morgan and Cheryl A. Thompson.
