Aging & Health Promotion News Focus On Falls PreventionActivities set for NC Falls Prevention Awareness Week 9/20-26; Falls prevention broadens reach. Preventing falls, and consequently preventing disability and reining in health care costs, are receiving special attention as Fall begins. Through the efforts of the North Carolina Falls Prevention Coalition, of which the UNC Institute on Aging is a founding partner, and the national Falls Free Coalition of 35 states and 70 organizations, awareness of falls prevention interventions, and implementation of programming to carry them out, are increasing throughout the state and nation. Ellen Schneider, Associate Director at the Institute on Aging and steering committee member of the North Carolina Falls Prevention Coalition notes, “Falls are not an inevitable part of aging. We are undertaking a concerted effort in our state to raise awareness of the evidence-based actions that can be taken to help reduce the chances of falling and to increase the availability of programs that have been proven to help reduce falls. We all want seniors to remain as safe and independent as possible for as long as possible.”
