Governor's Conference On Aging- Hotel Reservation Deadline

The 2010 North Carolina Governor's Conference on Aging is scheduled for October 13-15, 2010. The registration form is available on the conference website. The deadline for the special block room rate ($105/night plus tax) for the conference hotel is September 13th. Make reservations at this rate at the hotel's Conference link, or call the Sheraton Imperial (919-941-5050) and ask for the NC Conference on Aging block room rate.

Policy Roundtables Preliminary Report Released

Earlier this year, six Governor's Policy Roundtables were held across North Carolina through the collaborative efforts of the Office of the Governor and her Advisory Council on Aging, the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services, the UNC Institute on Aging and the state’s Area Agencies on Aging. Building a Livable and Senior Friendly North Carolina: Drafting a Plan, is the Preliminary Report available to view online. Over 600 individual workshop participants identified major issues facing North Carolina’s aging population that will require effective policy and programmatic responses. The many issues and ideas shared at these roundtables laid the groundwork for the Governor’s Conference on Aging on October 13‐15, 2010.

NC DAAS Award Nominations Open- Due 8/20/10

The NC Division of Aging and Adult Services is now accepting nominations for the 2010 Maddox, Messer and Busse awards. Nominations are due August 20th and the awards will be presented at the North Carolina Conference On Aging. Questions pertaining to the awards or the nomination process can be directed to Mary Edwards at (919) 733-3983 or Mary.Edwards@dhhs.nc.gov.

DeFriese Doctoral Award Nominations Open To 9/13/10

The UNC Institute on Aging has extended the deadline for doctoral student nominations for the 2010 Gordon H. DeFriese Career Development in Aging Research Awards until September 13, 2010. (The extension does not apply to the faculty/staff award nominations.) Two $2,500 awards will be available for doctoral students. Please visit the DeFriese Awards web page for the application form and additional information.

NC To Observe Falls Prevention Awareness Week In September

September 20-26, 2010, will be observed as Falls Prevention Awareness Week in North Carolina for the second year in a row. Nationally, 34 states will observe Falls Prevention Awareness Week, or Falls Prevention Awareness Day on September 23rd, to be proclaimed by the U.S. Senate. Visit the NC Falls Prevention Coalition web site to learn more about this issue, and falls prevention partnerships, in our state.

SGS Call For Presentations- Due 10/1/10

The 32nd Annual Meeting of the Southern Gerontological Society, themed "The New Aging Enterprise", will be held April 14-17, 2011 in Raleigh, NC. The Call for Presentations is now online. The submission deadline is October 1, 2010.

Dr. Peggye Dilworth-Anderson, IOA Interim Co-Director and Director of the Center for Aging and Diversity, was quoted in the USA Today article, "Race, culture may play role in Alzheimer's Disease" on July 14, 2010.
Dr. Peter Stein, IOA Associate Director for Aging Workforce Initiatives, was quoted in a Daily Southerner article on June 24, 2010: "Forecast: Older adults expect to retire later in life."

Good News For NC Colleagues

Laura D'Arcy, predoctoral fellow in the Carolina Program in Health and Aging Research, has been awarded an Alice S. Hersh Scholarship to attend the 2010 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting, and the 2010 RAND Summer Institute.

NCAOA Will Offer Boot Camp In November

The North Carolina Association on Aging is pleased to announce another session of the popular Aging Boot Camp, an orientation program for brand new employees in the aging network, and others wanting a basic understanding of aging issues and services. The Boot Camp is scheduled for November 3-4, 2010, in Hickory. Registration is limited to 30 participants. Contact Bill Lamb at bill_lamb@unc.edu or 919-966-9444 for more information.
