North Carolina Conference On Aging NewsThe 2010 North Carolina Conference on Aging Sponsor, Exhibitor, Advertiser Guide is now available on the Conference web site. The Guide contains information about opportunities to showcase your organization, materials and services, as well as the 2010 Application Form. Limited space is available on a first come, first serve basis; during past conferences, the exhibit hall was completely sold out! The registration form is also available for anyone who needs to register before the end of the fiscal year. Although the official pre-program is still in progress, a preliminary schedule is available. The theme of the 2010 North Carolina Conference on Aging, also designated this year as a Governor's Conference on Aging, is Building a Livable and Senior-Friendly North Carolina. DeFriese Awards: Nominations Deadline ExtendedThe UNC Institute on Aging will continue to accept nominations for the 2010 Gordon H. DeFriese Career Development in Aging Research Awards until June 18, 2010. One $5,000 award to support research activities in the field of aging is available for a UNC-Chapel Hill junior faculty or staff member, and two $2,500 awards are available for doctoral students. J2C Project Generates Award For FundersThe Jobs to Careers: Promoting Work-Based Learning for Quality Care program was recently recognized when the program’s funding foundations received the Critical Impact Award during the annual conference of the Council on Foundations. UNC plays a vital role in this program by providing the national evaluation team for the program. The award was presented to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and The Hitachi Foundation, who collaborated on the launch and support of the national Jobs to Careers program that addresses the needs of low wage health care workers while inspiring innovations in job training, career advancement and health care delivery. UNC School of Nursing Geriatrics Project Featured in Special Issue of JCENThe May 2010 issue of The Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing is a special issue on geriatric nursing education. It features the article, Development of a Scripted Unfolding Case Study Focusing on Delirium in Older Adults, by UNC professors Julianne B. Page, MSN, RN, Vicki Kowlowitz, PhD, and Kathy Rhodes Alden, EdD, RN, IBCLC, on the development, use, and evaluation of a geriatric clinical simulation, a dynamic, innovative alternative to the traditional lecture format. (Full citation in the New from NC Researchers column to the right.) The simulation was created as part of a project, Improving the Care of Acutely Ill Elders, led by Dr. Mary H. Palmer, Distinguished Professor in the UNC School of Nursing and IOA Interim Co-Director. The project trains nurses and nursing assistants in geriatric care, and is supported in part by a grant from the US DHHS, Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professions, Division of Nursing under #D62HP01913, Comprehensive Geriatric Education Program, from 2003-2012. Dr. Palmer also co-authored a guest editorial for this issue of JCEN. SGS Call For PresentationsThe 32nd Annual Meeting of the Southern Gerontological Society, themed "The New Aging Enterprise", will be held April 14-17, 2011 in Raleigh, NC. The Call for Presentations is now online. The submission deadline is October 1, 2010. Good News For NC ColleaguesMichael LaMantia, MD, a post-doctoral fellow in the IOA's Carolina Program in Health and Aging Research (CPHAR), received a Presidential Poster Award during the 2010 Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Geriatrics Society for his poster, "Normal Triage Vitals Signs in Elderly Patients with Severe Illness and Injury". Quoting The ExpertsIOA Associate Director for Public Service Bill Lamb was quoted in the article, "Swelling senior ranks won't lack for advice" in the May 17 edition of the News & Observer. NC Observes Elder Abuse Awareness MonthTo coincide with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2010, North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue has proclaimed the period from May 9 to June 20 to be Vulnerable Adult and Elder Abuse Awareness Month in our state, encouraging citizens to participate in community efforts to support and improve the safety and well-being of vulnerable and older adults. More information is available on the Division of Aging and Adult Services web site. NC*Aging Marks 100th IssueThis is the 100th issue of the NC*Aging e-newsletter. It began in December, 2000 as text sent in the body of an email message, and evolved to a web-based format in October, 2003. Today it reaches over 1,000 faculty, students, legislators, aging services providers and others in the aging field statewide.
