Aging Workforce Interest Group Meets May 5thThe next meeting of the IOA's Interest Group on the Aging Workforce is scheduled for Tuesday May 5th, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Institute. Two speakers will focus on innovative mature worker programs in two major corporations which have won best practices awards from national and local organizations. Michael Romesburg is Manager of Workforce Development Programs at CVS, and Debra Prather is District Operations Manager, Kelly Services. All are welcome: please contact Diane Wurzinger to confirm your attendance, at diane_wurzinger@unc.edu, or Peter Stein for information, pstein@schsr.unc.edu. Altpeter To Do Fulbright Award In AmsterdamDr. Mary Altpeter, Senior Research Scientist and Director of the IOA’s Healthy Aging Initiatives, has received a Fulbright Senior Specialist scholarship to consult with the European Master’s in Gerontology (EuMaG) program at the VU-University in Amsterdam. She will work with EuMaG faculty to design online training modules for aging services providers, and web-based interactive courses for students. EuMaG attracts students and professionals from throughout Europe, and other continents, and students have limited in-person contact with educators during the two-year program. Online modules thus provide an excellent opportunity to upgrade the quality of EuMaG by offering a larger number of optional courses on a cost-effective basis. Dr. Altpeter has previously received funding from the UNC system to develop online educational courses for undergraduate and graduate students, and she is under contract with the National Council on Aging’s Center for Healthy Aging to develop, with IOA Associate Director Danielle Borasky, a series of online health promotion training modules for aging services providers and their partners. Good News For NC ColleaguesSheryl Zimmerman, MSW, PhD, Professor at the UNC School of Social Work, and Program Director of UNC's Interdisciplinary Certificate in Aging, has been named the Mary Lily Kenan Flagler Bingham Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was approved for this highly competitive appointment by the UNC Board of Trustees on April 14th. May Aging ObservancesOlder Americans Month: Each year the Administration on Aging (AoA) issues a theme for Older Americans Month to assist the National Aging Services Network of state, tribal, area agencies on aging, and community services providers, in planning for activities in May or throughout the year. This year’s theme, “Living Today for a Better Tomorrow”, reflects AoA’s continued focus on prevention efforts and programs that are helping older adults have better health as they age and avoid the risks of chronic disease, disability and injury. In addition, the Census Bureau has a new "Facts for Features" edition for OAM 2009. Person-Centered Thinking For Aging PlannersPerson-Centered Thinking (PCT) is a way of empowering persons who need services and supports because of disabilities or chronic illnesses to retain positive control over their lives. PCT was developed for use in the field of developmental disabilities in the 1980s and is now used in work with other populations, including older adults in long-term residential care. The April 2009 issue of the NC DAAS Aging Planning Bulletin elaborates on this topic and its relevance for North Carolina aging services providers. |
