UNC to Host National Healthy Aging Conference in Conjunction with 2009 Aging Exchange
With ever increasing recognition of the importance of environmental factors to healthy aging, practicing professionals and academicians will convene in Chapel Hill on September 15 and 16, 2009, to address challenges, research evidence, and promising strategies for practice and policy change. The conference, entitled Promoting Environmental and Policy Change to Support Healthy Aging, is the third in a series of research to practice symposia sponsored by the Prevention Research Centers-Healthy Aging Research Network, of which UNC is a member center. The UNC Aging Exchange will be held in conjunction with the conference, on September 16, and the NC Healthy Aging Coalition will also hold its quarterly meeting.

Aging Workforce Interest Group Meets On April 7
The next meeting of the Aging Workforce Interest Group is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7th from 1 to 3 p.m.
Myra A. Beatty, Workforce Policy Associate, Division of Workforce Development, NC Department of Commerce will speak about workforce trends in North Carolina during the current economic downturn.
In addition, Tonya Cedars, Director of the Area Agency on Aging for the Eastern Carolina Council of Governments will address how the economic crisis is affecting older workers. Marty Knowlton, Elderhostel Co-founder, Has Died
Elderhostel co-founder Martin P. Knowlton died on March 13, 2009 at 88 years old.
Elderhostel is a not-for-profit educational travel organization promoting lifelong learning for older adults. Knowlton is heralded as a pioneer and a visionary in realizing the potential for seniors to lead active, engaged lives in retirement.

April 16, 2009, is National Healthcare Decisions Day. This initiative, sponsored by numerous organizations including the American Bar Association, AARP, the National Association of Social Workers and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, encourages patient use of advance directives regarding their health care, and communication between patient and provider regarding these decisions.
