News & HighlightsNCCOA Speakers To Feature DeFriese, GraedonsThe 5th Annual North Carolina Conference on Aging, to be held October 25th-27th, is fast approaching. The early registration deadline of September 29th is fast approaching. Don't be late and miss this year's featured speakers. The opening reception remarks will be given by IOA Director Victor Marshall, Dennis Streets, Director of the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services, and Tony Waldrop, UNC Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, to mark the 10th anniversary of the UNC Institute on Aging. Wednesday and Thursday evening receptions will have live entertainment by UNC's Clef Hangers, a UNC student jazz ensemble, UNC's Loreleis, and the NC Senior Games SiverArts Performers. IOA founder Gordon H. DeFriese will deliver the opening plenary, the AARP luncheon will feature Cheryl Matheis, and the renowned team of pharmacologist Joe Graedon and medical anthropologist Terry Graedon will give the closing plenary. DEAR Program Seeks Seed Grant ProposalsThe Demography and Economics of Aging Research Program at UNC-CH is soliciting pilot project proposals for seed grants to support new research in the area of demography and the economics of aging. The Fall 2006 deadline for receipt of proposals is November 1. Submission details are available on the DEAR web site, or by email from David Blau. IOA Information Center Offers Pubalerts ServicePubalerts are a service of the UNC Institute on Aging Information Center. Each Pubalert delivers an emailed list of new publications in a topical area, covering journal publications, grey literature, and general news. Current topics are health promotion and healthy aging, older workers, and frontline healthcare workers. Sign up. End Of Life Resources From The IOA Information CenterA newly created guide to web-based End Of Life Planning Resources For North Carolinians is now available. A special section with Spanish language resources is included. Lifelong Access Libraries Institute Wrap-UpPhotos and summary remarks about the recent First Annual Lifelong Access Libraries Institute, jointly hosted by the Institute on Aging and the UNC-CH School of Information and Library Science, are now available. New Partnership For NC Elder CareImproving the health of North Carolina’s elderly population by bringing education and training in geriatric care to nurses in rural or underserved areas is the goal of a new partnership between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing and the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) program. The program will launch simultaneously this month in two rural/underserved regions of North Carolina including a five-county area where, according to U.S. census data, the poverty rate is 20.4 percent for persons aged 65 years and older. Elderly Independence Subject Of SummitChoices for Independence: A National Leadership Summit, is a 2-day meeting to be held in Washington, DC on December 5th and 6th, 2006. Federal, state, tribal and local leaders will share tools, strategies and best practices for helping older Americans remain healthy and independent. Good News For NC ColleaguesThe Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) has appointed three North Carolina gerontologists to the special advisory board for its journal, Gerontology and Geriatrics Education: Dena Shenk of UNC-Charlotte, Charles Longino of Wake Forest University, and James Mitchell of East Carolina University. UNC Allied Health Sciences Assistant Research Professor Charles Bernacchio, and his team on the IOA Research Stimulus Grant-funded study, "A Pilot Study to Explore Factors Influencing Pursuit of Work in Persons with Disabilities After Age 50", have received additional funding from the AHS Research Council. |

Aging & Health Promotion News Active Aging Week coming in September. The International Council on Active Aging is sponsoring the fourth annual Active Aging Week from September 25-October 1, 2006. Host sites will feature programming to orient older adults toward an active lifestyle which includes physical activity and exercise options. Free classes, education seminars, access to fitness facilities, health fairs or activities such as community walks or tennis matches are some ways to reach out to this population.
