Aging & Health Promotion News

'Hospital Compare' useful, versatile tool. The United States Department of Health and Human Services has developed a web site for adults, including Medicare recipients, to measure how often hospitals provide recommended care to get the best patient outcomes. Hospital Compare helps patients and their health care providers compare the quality of care provided in acute-care hospitals (general hospitals) and critical access hospitals (small, remote hospitals) that agree to submit data on the quality of services they provide for certain conditions such as heart disease. This quality information not only helps consumers make good decisions about health care, but also encourages hospitals to improve the quality of care they provide.

Since July 2000, the Institute for the Study of Health has been conducting the Longitudinal Study of Training and Practice in Geriatric Medicine for the Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs (ADGAP), funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation to collect data regarding geriatric medical training and practice. Among the purposes of the study are: to collect data to determine if recently implemented federal, state and private programs have strengthened physicians' geriatrics training and practice across the United States; to provide high quality information on the status of geriatric medicine training and practice to guide national policy; and to provide information leading to increased recognition of the importance of geriatric research and training programs. The 'Figures and Tables' page on the web site is an excellent quick statistical reference.
