NewsBill Lamb, Social Worker of the YearOn March 12, 2004, Bill Lamb, Associate Director for Public Service at the UNC Institute on Aging, will be named the Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter. The award presentation will take place during the 2004 Ethics Conference and Annual Awards Program at the NCSU McKimmon Center in Raleigh, NC. This prestigious award honors Bill's lifetime of service. Read more... March 5th Deadline for DeFriese Award NominationsThe UNC Institute on Aging is accepting nominations for the 2003-2004 Gordon H. DeFriese Career Development in Aging Research Awards until this Friday, March 5, 2004. The awards are given to one junior faculty/staff member and one doctoral student from UNC Chapel Hill. March 15th Deadline to Submit Presentation Applications for 2004 SE4A/NCCOAThis year's North Carolina Conference on Aging has a different twist to it. We will be holding a joint conference with the Southeastern Association of Area Agencies on Aging (SE4A) at the Sheraton Imperial Convention Center, in Durham from October 17th to October 20th, 2004. This expands the participant base for the conference to representatives from 8 states including North Carolina. If you are interested in presenting at this event or hosting a roundtable, more information and the call for presentations can be downloaded from the NC Conference on Aging website. ASA/NCOA Joint ConferenceOn Thursday, April 15, 2004, the American Society on Aging will host a special program on health disparities and older adults as part of the ASA-NCOA Joint Conference in San Francisco (April 13-17). Bringing together the aging network and public health systems, this one-day special program will address the crucial goals of Healthy People 2010 to increase quality and years of healthy life and eliminate health disparities. Leaders in the field of aging and health will outline health disparities experienced by elders and showcase selected promising practices in closing the gap. Read more... Medicare Information CampaignThe Department of Health and Human Services is launching a nationwide education campaign to inform seniors about the new benefits being offered to them under the recently enacted Medicare legislation. Television ads will run through March on national network and cable programs. Seniors may also visit the Medicare.gov web site, where they can find a series of fact sheets, or call 1-800-Medicare. HHS will soon send information to every beneficiary explaining the new Medicare law. Good News About NC ColleaguesCongratulations to former CPHAR fellow Peter Reed, who successfully defended his doctoral dissertation 'Food and fluid consumption among long-term care residents with dementia'. A copy is now available in the IOA Information Center as noted at right.
