IOA To Host International Research Group On Older Workers

The Institute on Aging will host about fifty research team members of the "Workforce Aging in the New Economy" project (WANE) over the first weekend of December. An overview of the research issues being addressed by the project will be presented at an open seminar, featuring international panelists, on Thursday, December 4th (see calendar below or read more).

CPHAR Openings Available

The Carolina Program in Healthcare and Aging Research (CPHAR), based at the UNC Institute on Aging, announces two new openings for one predoctoral fellowship position and one postdoctoral fellowship position. The deadline for application is January 15, 2004. Details about the program and application procedures are available on the CPHAR website.

Aging Exchange, Distinguished Lecture Set For January 2004

On January 20, 2004, the UNC Institute on Aging, in collaboration with several partners at UNC, will host a half-day event to celebrate aging research, education and service on campus. The Aging Exchange: Education, Research and Service at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will especially highlight the contributions of graduate students and fellows. In conjunction with this event, Dr. Elizabeth Mutran will give a distinguished lecture on "Health and Self-Concept: Cause and Effect in Older Family and Work Roles." Read more...

Dementia Storytelling Project Comes to NC

The National TimeSlips Program, based at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee's Center on Age and Community, is a storytelling method that frees people with dementia from the anxiety over memory by encouraging them to use their imaginations. The program has announced the creation of two new Regional Training Bases located in North Carolina. Read more...

Good News About NC Colleagues

Former UNC IOA CPHAR fellow Joe Sharkey, now on the faculty at Texas A&M University, is the author of the article 'Risk and presence of food insufficiency are associated with low nutrient intakes and multimorbidity among homebound older women who receive home-delivered meals' in the November 2003 issue of Journal of Nutrition. The data reported in the article are from a North Carolina study, supported by the Carolina Program in Healthcare and Aging Research. The paper won an award from the American Public Health Association, and Dr. Sharkey will lecture on the topic as part of the IOA seminar Series on December 9, 2003.

The National Clearinghouse on the Direct Care Workforce supports efforts to improve the quality of jobs for frontline workers who assist people who are elderly and/or living with disabilities. The web site contains a practice profile database, links to issue-oriented articles, information on state-specific legislative issues and federally funded research, signup information for a bi-weekly newsletter, and abstracts of articles on workplace culture, caregiving practices, career advancement and more.
