==========================<>============================== NC*AGING e-newsletter #29 a service of the UNC Institute on Aging Information Center April 2, 2003 ==========================<>============================== CHANGE IN TOPIC OF APRIL 3 IOA SEMINAR Professor Jason Powell, who was scheduled to give the IOA seminar on April 3, 2003, titled "Re-inventing Gerontology: The Case of Foucauldian Gerontology," is unable to visit as planned. We hope that Professor Powell will be able to visit in the fall. The new seminar topic for April 3 is "Approaches to Health Promotion and Aging". Given by Mary Altpeter, it will focus on a review of models in this area, leading to the 'ecological model' that underlies the Healthy Aging Network (HAN), a CDC-funded network in which the Institute on Aging takes part. Specific information about this class of Senior Leaders will be posted in the near future. <<<<>>>> ASSET PRESERVATION FOR ELDERS: GERONTOLOGY SPEAKER SERIES The Gerontology Program at UNC-Greensboro is sponsoring a special presentation, The Poor and the Rich have more in common than either has with the Middle Class: Asset Preservation for Elders, on April 9 at 3:30 pm in the Claxton Room of Elliott University Center. Speaker A. Frank Johns, JD, CELA, RG, is a nationally recognized authority in Elder Law and Guardianship, Board Certified in Elder Law by the National Elder Law Foundation and a Registered Guardian, a well-published author, and he currently serves on the Boards of the Western Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Seniors Centers and the Corporation of Guardianship, Inc. The site is part of an agency effort to study and prioritize environmental health risks to the nationīs growing elderly population, according to EPA Administrator Christie Whitman. The Web site describes the effort and discusses some of the common environmental hazards that can harm older Americans. Sage Crossroads http://www.sagecrossroads.net Sage Crossroads is an initiative of the Alliance for Aging Research and the American Association for the Advancement of Science to provide an online forum for emerging issues of human aging. Policymakers, journalists and interested consumers have the opportunity to explore the impact of science and technology on aging. Visitors may register to participate in scheduled webcasts on such topics as, "Does longevity science make good economic sense?" Also available are online discussion groups, the chance to participate in surveys, a news archive and links to the web sites of key policymakers in aging. These web sites and others have been selected for inclusion in AGELIB, the Institute on Aging's database of aging resources.
