The deadline for application is April 1, for a possible start date as early as May 1, 2003, but not later than September 30, 2003. Ishan Canty Williams, Ph.D., is the program's first postdoctoral fellow. Dr Williams is a native of Winston Salem, NC, received her bachelor's degree in psychology from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received both her Masters degree and Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her interests in aging include: African American older adults and their caregivers, emotional and physical well-being of caregivers, health disparities, informal and formal care systems, and cultural sensitivity in research. The deadline for this application is February 7, 2003, with a possible start date as early as May 1, 2003. <<<<>>>> NC CONFERENCE ON AGING CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS The second annual North Carolina Conference on Aging , to be held in Charlotte on September 10-12, 2003, has released its Call for Presentations. Persons interested in making a presentation at the conference are asked to respond to the call by March 15, 2003. Also available from the Conference web site at http://www.aging.unc.edu/nccoa/index.html are forms to reserve advertisement and/or exhibit space. <<<<>>>> IOA ANNOUNCES SPRING SEMINAR SERIES The UNC Institute on Aging announces a Seminar Series for the Spring 2003 semester. These seminars are open to faculty, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students, and otherwise by arrangement with the program director. The seminars are "bag lunch" (beverages are provided). She will be visiting until the end of April, 2003. Her research interests in the psychology of aging include communication predicaments of aging, health professionals' communication with older adults, cross-cultural stereotypes about aging, successful aging with a disability and coping with visual impairment. Dr. Ryan will lead the CPHAR Proseminar on February 6 (see "Upcoming Events," below), and would also welcome communication from colleagues with similar interests. DeFriese Career Development in Aging Research Awards. These annual awards honor Dr. DeFriese's distinguished thirty-year career in the conduct and development of research to improve the quality of lives of older North Carolinians.
