==========================<>============================== NC*AGING e-newsletter #17 a service of the UNC Institute on Aging Information Center April 11, 2002 ==========================<>============================== UNC CHAPEL HILL AT VALENCIA FORUM Two people from UNC-Chapel Hill attended the Valencia Forum on Aging, April 1-4 in Valencia Spain. Institute Director Victor Marshall presented an invited parallel plenary address, New Perspectives Worldwide on Aging, Work and Retirement. This paper will shortly be added to the IOA’s digital library. Angela Huang, a graduate student in the Department of Maternal and Child Health, also attended the conference. She went on to present a paper at the NGO conference in Madrid. Both conferences are lead-ups feeding input to the World Assembly on Aging, now in progress. SGS EARLY BIRD DEADLINE APPROACHES The early-bird registration deadline for the Southern Gerontological Society confernce in Orlando is May 1. Registration fees are: members $175; non-members $210; students $110. Three students from the same campus registering together receive a lower rate of $100 each. UNC SENIOR LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE NAMES 2002 SENIOR LEADERS Four Seniors Leaders have been accepted to the 2002 class of the UNC Senior Leadership Initiative. These leaders are: Ed Harrill, Ruth Klemmer, Rachel Reddick and Sallie Williamson. The Senior Leadership Intitiative is intended to provide leadership development opportunities individuals selected based on their leadership potential and potential to impact the well-being of North Carolina's older adults. The program began under the auspices of Duke University's Long Term Care Resources Program and remains a cooperative venture between the two programs. PRESENTATION APPLICATIONS DUE APRIL 26 Applications are due April 26 for those responding to the North Carolina Conference on Aging call for presentations. Be part of this exciting event! Presenters can submit applications for workshop presentations, roundtables, or posters. Although registration forms are not yet available, potential presenters are advised that the early registration rate for the conference will be $120 (includes 2 lunches and 2 receptions) and a special conference room rate of $89 plus tax per night will be available from the Greensboro Marriott Downtown. <<<<>>>> GOOD NEWS ABOUT NC COLLEAGUES Dena Schenk, Director, Gerontology Program, UNC Charlotte, has an article published in an issue of Ageing and Society devoted to rural aging. Her article is "Intergenerational family relationships of older women in central Minnesota,” in Ageing and Society, 21(5): 591-603. Philippa Clarke, Victor Marshall, Sandra Black, and Angela Colantonio have had an article published, “Well-being after stroke in Canadian seniors. Findings from the Canadian Study of Health and Aging.” Stroke 33: 1016-1021. <<<<>>>> FEATURED WEB SITE: Friends of Residents in Long Term Care http://forltc.home.mindspring.com/ As a North Carolina nonprofit citizens' advocacy organization for residents in long term care facilities, the mission of Friends of Residents in LTC is to promote the highest possible quality of life for those who cannot live independently, and for those who care for them. The web site features: analysis of state legislation affecting nursing homes, a newsletter, and a bill of rights for nursing home and adult care home residents. Bill Lamb of the UNC IOA is chair of the board of directors. This web site and others have been selected for inclusion in AGELIB, the Institute on Aging’s database of aging resources.
