PLAN NOW FOR SOUTHERN GERONTOLOGICAL SOCIETY CONFERENCE Now is the time to make plans for the Southern Gerontological Society conference, to be held in Orlando May 22-25th. The theme this year is "Using the Gift of Long Life." One of the featured speakers is Dr. James Birren, pioneering psychologist of aging and a leading gerontologist. Among many posters, papers, workshops and symposia, there will be a symposium on health promotion organized by Becky Hunter (Program on Aging, UNC-Chapel Hill), "Building a Statewide Prevention Initiative: Lessons from the North Carolina Healthy Aging Network." Speakers include Becky Hunter, Victor Marshall and Mary Altpeter from the Institute on Aging, Betty Wiser from the NC Division of Public Health, and Karylee Clark from the Mountain Area Health Education Center, Asheville. GOOD NEWS ABOUT NC COLLEAGUES Eleanor Covan, UNC-Wilmington, has been appointed the new editor of the journal Health Care for Women International, which is now in its 26th year of publication. Ellie is Professor of Sociology at UNC- W and Director of Gerontology Programs there, as well as being a member of the Statewide Advisory Committee of the IOA. Denise Gammonley, Clinical Assistant Professor at the UNC-CH School of Social Work, and Linda Rahija, Program Coordinator at the UNC-CH Center for Aging Research and Educational Services (CARES), have received a Hartford Geriatric Enrichment grant as part of the new "Geriatric Enrichment in Social Work Education Program." Drs. Othelia Lee and Cheryl Waites, faculty of the North Carolina State University undergraduate Social Work Program, have also received the Hartford Geriatric Enrichment grant. Victor Marshall, Director of the UNC Institute on Aging, has been appointed to the editorial board of Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences. The editor of that journal is Charles Longino, Jr., Professor of Sociology at Wake Forest University and a member of the IOA Advisory Board. Shirley S. Travis has been named a Pope Eminent Scholar of the Rosalynn Carter Institute. Dr. Travis is the Dean Colvard Distinguished Professor at UNC - Charlotte and a Faculty Associate of the University's Center for Professional and Applied Ethics. She is also the President of the National Gerontological Nursing Association. <<<<>>>> FEATURED WEB SITE: Financial Aspects of Aging Research http://www.faar.org/ FAAR.org is a joint venture of the AARP Andrus Foundation and the National Center on Women and Aging (NCWA) at the Heller Graduate School at Brandeis University. The site features abstracts, and links to some full-text reports, of high-quality, timely research studies concerning monetary issues related to aging that individuals face as they approach and enter their retirement years. Many of the abstracts included are from AARP's AgeLine Database. This web site and others have been selected for inclusion in AGELIB, the Institute on Aging's database of aging resources.
