==========================<>============================== NC*AGING e-newsletter #6 a service of the UNC Institute on Aging Information Center May 2, 2001 ==========================<>============================== CELEBRATE OLDER AMERICANS IN NC The month of May is the time to celebrate Older Americans Month. One way to do that is to listen to WUNC's special series on "North Carolina Voices: The State of Aging". Throughout May, WUNC will have numerous reports and interviews on aging in North Carolina. You can see their story schedule and link to the RealAudio broadcasts from this page: http://wunc.org/news/aging/ <<<<>>>> DATA SETS ON AGING The National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (NACDA) makes data sets available to the public -- some publicly available and some only to members of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). Under a new arrangement, users can *directly* access the restricted data if they are using a campus computer at one of the member institutions (access is granted to approved IP addresses). Most universities in North Carolina are ICPSR members, so this new feature should be available to most gerontology researchers in the state. Read more about this new feature: http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/ORG/announce.html#direct2 Or, go directly to the NACDA: http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/NACDA/ <<<<>>>> UPDATE ON AARP AGELINE AVAILABILITY You now have expanded options for accessing AARP AgeLine (index of gerontology literature). For gerontology faculty, the IOA is offering accounts through the AHEC Digital Library. For others, AARP has made AARP AgeLine available via its web site (note: this version has some limitations). Read more about this database and access our online tutorial at: http://www.aging.unc.edu/infocenter/ageline/index.html <<<<>>>> GERONTOLOGY JOURNALS ONLINE The Journals of Gerontology (series a and b) and The Gerontologist are now available online from the publisher's web site (http://www.gerontologyjournals.org/). Access is free until July 2001, after which access will be restricted to subscribers only. The Information Center can help you locate aging journals and articles, either from its own collection or from other collections. For basic information on where gerontology journals are available online or in print, try our Journal Finder: http://www.aging.unc.edu/infocenter/journals/index.asp <<<<>>>> THESES & DISSERTATIONS The Information Center collects theses and dissertations on aging topics written by NC students. Faculty who advise masters or doctoral students are asked to encourage their students to submit their works to us. Guidelines are available here: http://www.aging.unc.edu/infocenter/theses.html <<<<>>>> UPCOMING EVENTS IN NC A complete calendar is available at http://aging.unc.edu/calendar.html May 3, 2001 | RETREAT UNC Institute on Aging Research Retreat for UNC-CH Faculty | 9:30am-3:00pm | Friday Center, Chapel Hill, NC May 4, 2001 | SHORT COURSE Public Policy Issues for Nonprofits in an Aging | From the Duke Certificate Program in Nonprofit Management | 10:00am-4:00pm | Duke Hospital South May 12, 2001 | SEMINAR Caregiving Seminar: Financial, Legal and Ethical Concerns | Sponsored by UNCG & Blakey Hall | 11:00am-4:00pm | Elon, NC May 24, 2001 | CONFERENCE Crossing Over Jordan: African Americans and Care at the End of Life | Sponsored by the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life | 8:30am-4:00pm | Durham, NC <<<<>>>> NEW RESOURCES AVAILABLE These are a few of the recent acquisitions of the IOA Information Center.
