About National Nutrition Month®

During National Nutrition Month® 2012 and beyond, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) encourages everyone to “Get Your Plate in Shape.” This year’s theme focuses on reinforcing the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.  “Get Your Plate in Shape” supports the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the USDA’s new food icon, MyPlate, reminding everyone to be more mindful of the foods we eat.

The MyPlate symbol illustrates the five food groups using a familiar mealtime visual, a place setting. Dividing the plate into four sections: fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins, as well as a glass representing dairy products shows you how you can incorporate the Dietary Guidelines recommendations into every meal.

For more information about the program, go to www.choosemyplate.gov.

National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Registered Dietitian Day, celebrated March 14th, increases awareness of registered dietitians as the indispensable providers of food and nutrition services and recognizes RDs for their commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives.

Join the Orange County Health Department and Orange County Government Offices as we encourage residents and employees to “Get Your Plate in Shape.”
