Victor Marshall To Complete Tenure As IOA Director On June 30, 2009

Victor Marshall will complete his tenure as director of the UNC Institute on Aging on June 30th, 2009, with a yet-to-be-determined interim director stepping in on July 1st.

Dr. Marshall began his position as Director of the Institute on Aging in July 1999. During his tenure, the IOA grew from less than 10 employees to more than 40 employees, and a total annual operating budget over $3.0 million.

In addition, Dr. Marshall maintained his scholarly publishing activities. Since his arrival at UNC in 1999, he has published three books (a fourth is in press), 17 book chapters, 21 journal articles, and several reports. He also serves on the editorial boards of the journals Ageing and Society, and Social Forces, and the Encyclopedia of Gerontology.

He has been an active member of the UNC Department of Sociology, where he teaches a course on social theories of aging and the life course, and supervises undergraduate, masters and doctoral students.

Victor will transition to being a fulltime professor in the UNC Department of Sociology. He will also continue with the IOA where he is principal investigator of the Carolina Program in Health and Aging Research grant, and co-principal investigator or co-investigator on other IOA research projects.
