IOA CPHAR Training Program Renewed

October 1, 2008

CPHAR, the Carolina Program for Health and Aging Research, has received renewal funding from the National Institute on Aging (NIA grant number 2T32AG000272-06A2). The renewal funding, coming after five years of program success, supports an expansion of CPHAR capabilities. In its first five years CPHAR was able to fund two postdoctoral and two predoctoral fellows at one time. It is now able to fund two postdoctoral fellows and four predoctoral fellows. Six new fellows have been appointed effective September 30, 2008.

Fellows receive a stipend, travel and research support funds, and mentoring through the Program's more than thirty mentors from across the campus. The program is led by Dr. Victor Marshall, IOA Director, and he is joined by Dr. Jan Busby-Whitehead, IOA Associate Director for Clinical Affairs and Director, Center for Aging and Health of the School of Medicine, and Dr. Peggye Dilworth-Anderson, IOA Associate Director for Aging and Diversity, to form the executive committee. Additional governance is provided by a steering committee from across the campus.

The new postdoctoral fellows are:

Dr. John Cagle, who has completed doctoral studies in social work at Virginia Commonwealth University, who will work with Dr. Sheryl Zimmerman as mentor;

Dr. Michael LaMantia, who is a geriatric medicine fellow at UNC. His CPHAR mentor will be Jan Busby-Whitehead.

The predoctoral fellows are:

Monique Cohen, a student in the Department of Health Policy and Management, mentored by Peggye Dilworth-Anderson;

Laura D'Arcy, a student in the Department of Health Policy and Management, mentored by Sally Stearns;

Eva Katz, a student in the Department of Community Nutrition, mentored by Barry Popkin;

Mairead Moloney, a student in sociology, mentored by Victor Marshall.

See the CPHAR web page for more details about CPHAR, updated biographical statements of past fellows, and (soon to be posted) biographies of our new fellows.
