Journal Of Applied Gerontology To Be Based At IOA;
Malcolm Cutchin Appointed Editor

March 12, 2007

Malcolm Cutchin, a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Allied Health Sciences at UNC, has been named the new editor of the Journal of Applied Gerontology. The journal is the official journal of the Southern Gerontological Society.

Cutchin intends to maintain the high standards set by the outgoing editor, Jim Mitchell, but he envisions some new directions for the journal. He says the journal will have a stronger international representation on the editorial board and hopefully in the source of articles too. At the same time, Cutchin intends to have the journal address what SGS past president Graham Rowles suggested as the organization's central goals: building "natural bridges between theory and application," focusing on regionally relevant problems such as poverty and race, and advancing advocacy and activism toward regional problems that affect older adults.

The assistant editor working with Cutchin will be Rebecca Aldrich, a PhD student in the Division of Occupational Science, Department of Allied Health, at UNC. The journal begins its life in the Institute on May 1, 2007.
