IOA Appoints Giuliani And Hartman As Senior Research Scientists

February 12, 2007

The IOA has appointed two new Senior Research Scientists, both of whom have lengthy connections with the Institute, including serving as mentors in the CPHAR and Research Stimulus Grants Programs.

Carol Giuliani, Professor in the Department of Human Movement Sciences, Division of Allied Health, School of Medicine, has an extensive research record in studying processing time as an early predictor of stroke recovery and rehabilitation, upper limb control parameters in subjects with stroke, predictors of functional ability in older adults and effects of exercise training on movement and function for subjects with stroke. Dr. Giuliani's web page provides additional information about her work.

Marilyn Hartman, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, conducts research in cognitive changes in older adults (especially memory, attention and executive function), geriatric neuropsychology and its relationship to sleep, exercise and everyday functioning and caregiving and the role of volunteers. More information about Dr. Hartman and her work is available on her web page.

There are now ten Research Scientists appointed to the UNC Institute on Aging. To be appointed, an investigator must have a significant research relationship with the Institute, including running at least part of their program of aging research through the IOA. The Research Scientists participate actively in IOA activities, supporting its programs and receiving institutional support in return .
