News Release

North Carolina sociologists honored with Matilda White Riley award for two consecutive years

September 6, 2006

Professor Peter Uhlenberg, Dept. of Sociology, UNC at Chapel Hill, and Professor Charles Longino, Jr., Dept. of Sociology, Wake Forest University, have been the first two recipients of the Matilda White Riley Award, from the Behavioral and Social Sciences Section, Gerontological Society of America. The award honors Matilda Riley, one of the pioneering sociologists of aging, who for many years was director of social and behavioral research at the National Institute on Aging. Shown are Professor Longino, last year's awardee, presenting the award lecture at the recent meeting of the ASA in Montreal, and Professor Uhlenberg, who was named as this year's recipient. Longino serves on the Institute on Aging Statewide Advisory Council, and Uhlenberg is a mentor in the Institute's Carolina Program for Health and Aging Research. Congratulations to our North Carolina colleagues!
