News ReleaseAging Exchange Awards AnnouncedFebruary 10 , 2005 The Aging Exchange Awards Committee announced the awards for papers and posters presented at its January 25 event. The Aging Exchange is an annual research day on the UNC at Chapel Hill campus, sponsored by the Institute on Aging in collaboration with the Schools of Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Social work, the Program on Aging of the School of Medicine, the Interdisciplinary Certificate in Aging Program, the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, the Center for Aging, Disablement and Long Term Care, and the Demography and Economics of Aging Research Program of the Carolina Population Center. The awards committee was chaired by Bill Lamb, Associate Director for Public Service of the Institute on Aging, and included: Dr. Jan Busby-Whitehead, Director of the Program on Aging and Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine in the UNC School of Medicine; Ann Johnson, Chairperson, Governor’s Advisory Council on Aging, Betty Zimmerman, a member of the Institute’s Senior Leadership in Aging Program, and Professor Sheryl Zimmerman, School of Social Work, Director of the Certificate in Aging Program, and Co-director of the Center for Aging, Disablement and Long Term Care. In the Post-doctoral and Clinical Fellow Category First Prize, Paper: Dr. Christopher Kelly, CPHAR training program, for a paper, “The extent and effectiveness of nursing home regulation in North Carolina” First Prize, Poster: Dr. Holly Biola, NRSA Primary Care Research Fellow Department of Family Medicine for a poster, “Family perceptions of quality of physician end-of-life (EOL) care in assisted living and nursing homes” Her co-authors are Drs Philip Sloane and Sheryl Zimmerman (co-directors) and Dr. Christianna Williams (Research Associate), Program on Aging, Disability and Long-Term Care, Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Second Prize, Poster: Dr. Ishan Canty Williams, CPHAR training program, for a poster, “The physical health of African American dementia caregivers.” In the Graduate Student Category First Prize Paper: Rachel DiSantostefano, AHRQ Dissertation Grant and Department of Health Policy and Administration, for a paper, “The cost-effectiveness of benign prostatic hyperplasia treatments.” Her co-authors are Professor A.K. Biddle, Dept. of Health Policy and Administration, and Dr. J. Lavelle, School of Medicine, Division of Urology. Second Prize Paper: Michelle Cheuk, Carolina Population Center and Department of Sociology, for a paper, “Socioedemographic correlates of disability transitions in the older population.” First Prize poster (tie): Matthew W. Ramsey, Dept. of Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology Predoctoral Training Program, with co-authors Lishan Su, Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Program on Aging, and Normal E. Sharpless, School of Medicine”, for a poster, “The role of cell cycle regulation in organismal aging.” Joshua M. Thorpe, AHRQ NRSA Predoctoral Fellow, American Foundation for Pharmaeeutical Education Predoctoral Fellow, School of Pharmacy, with co-authors Carolyn T. Kalinowski, School of Public Health, Mark E. Patterson, School of Pharmacy, and Betsy L. Sleath, School of Pharmacy and Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. For a poster, “Are community-dwelling elderly with high depressive symptoms less likely to obtain recommended preventive healthcare services?” Best Paper or Presentation that Demonstrates Campus-Community Collaboration Susan Herndon, Doctor of Pharmacy student, with Jena Ivey and Mary Roth, School of Pharmacy, for a poster, “The UNC Geriatric Medication Management Program.” |
