NC Healthy Aging Network Receives Funding to Continue Work on Health Promotion

September 23, 2004

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has awarded a five-year grant to the investigators at the Institute on Aging (Victor Marshall, Mary Altpeter) and the Program of Aging at the UNC School of Medicine (Rebecca Hunter) for continuation of the North Carolina Healthy Aging Network (NC-HAN).

NC-HAN proposed health promotion and aging activities that build upon accomplishments and draw upon a rich network of established relationships among multiple schools throughout the UNC system, state, regional and national governmental agencies, senior advocacy groups, partner communities, and the UNC Prevention Research Center.

NC-HAN will contribute actively to the national Healthy Aging Research Network (HAN) to move key HAN initiatives in the areas of physical activity, environmental assessment, and state infrastructure while addressing new areas including depression and nutrition. New partners will be engaged in the state level network, e.g., Carolina Geriatric Education Center and the NCSU Center for Universal Design, in order to plan and implement activities to further strengthen the translation of research into practice for aging services providers in the state.
