Wake County Agency Receives National Award for Seniors' Physical Activity

October 17, 2003

Resources for Seniors, Inc., a Wake County nonprofit organization, accepted an award last month from The National Council on the Aging as one of the Top Ten Senior Physical Activity Programs in the Country. This award recognizes outstanding creative technical assistance in promoting the growth, development and expansion of Senior Centers and/or State Association of Senior Center Organizations.

"We are thrilled to have received such a great honor for our Wake Forest, Whitaker Mills and East Wake Senior Centers. Many people work hard to provide the best possible services to the seniors in Wake County and this award is a credit to the Senior Center employees and volunteers." said David Cottengim, President of Resources for Seniors, Inc. "As our population grows here in the Triangle, it is more important than ever to invest in our community. We need to insure that we will be prepared to handle our aging population and Resources for Seniors is setting the pace," he continued.

The top 10 programs were chosen following a thorough review process, which included the help of a cadre of advisors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Aging Studies Branch and Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Administration on Aging, the Healthy Aging Network: Prevention Research Centers, as well as members of the Aging Network and NCOA.

Bill Lamb, Associate Director for Public Service at the Institute on Aging, is a member of the Board of Directors of Resources for Seniors. The Institute leads the North Carolina Healthy Aging Network, which focuses on health promotion for older adults.
