News Release

State Conference on Aging to be held in 2002

February 01, 2001

The North Carolina Summer Symposium on Aging, traditionally held each July at different locations around the state, is undergoing some changes. Stakeholders from educational, government and service sectors have been meeting over the past several months to consider plans for the symposium. The common desire is to continue with an inclusive conference which addresses the interests of government, educational, and aging service programs.

To date, the planning group has agreed to:

  • maintain Winston-Salem as the 2002 site
  • schedule the conference in October of 2002
  • provide a wide range of conference workshop options blended together including a showcase of research findings, policy-oriented workshops (particularly plenary sessions), and program tracks and workshops (e.g. senior center, adult day care, nutrition, ombudsman, etc.)
  • rename the conference the "North Carolina Conference on Aging".

The Institute on Aging will assume responsibility for coordinating and planning the conference and will work with an executive committee made up of representatives from the Division of Aging, North Carolina Association on Aging, AARP, Governor's Advisory Council on Aging, North Carolina Association of Area Agencies on Aging, and two academic institutions. Since the Institute will require additional staffing to carry out this responsibility, the conference in 2002 is contingent on them receiving that support. Additional information will be disseminated as plans develop.
