News Release

New Training Requirements for NIH Applicants

August 29, 2000

Beginning on October 1, 2000, the NIH will require education on the protection of human research participants for all investigators submitting NIH applications for grants or proposals for contracts or receiving new or non-competing awards for research involving human subjects.

Investigators will be asked to describe the education completed by all "key personnel" in the proposed research.

The NIH does not plan to issue a list of endorsed education programs, but has provided information about readily available curricula in its announcement located at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-00-039.html.

NIH has also provided a FAQ for investigators with questions about this new policy: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/hs_educ_faq.htm.

Efforts are underway at UNC-CH to address this issue campus-wide. Investigators are encouraged to contact the central Office of Sponsored Research or their appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB) office.
