News from the Southern Gerontological Society 21st Annual Meeting

June 21, 2000

At the 21st Annual Meeting of the Southern Gerontological Society (SGS), several awards were presented to North Carolina people and agencies. These included:

SGS Older Advocate Award - Dorothy Rose Crawford
Best Practices Award - UNC Chapel Hill Program on Aging
Applied Gerontologist Award - Dr. Betty Wiser
Academic Gerontologist Award - Dr. James Mitchell

In addition, SGS President Chuck Logino made a Presidential Award to Senator Beverly Purdue to recognize her many contributions to senior issues in North Carolina.

An Honorable Mention in the Print Media Awards (in the <25,000 circulation category) went to "Seasons: Making the Most of Retirement", a regular column by Ann Robson in the The Pilot.

A Runner-Up in the Print Media Awards (in the 100,000+ circulation category) went to The Charlotte Observer for "Osteoporosis: The Silent Thief" by Karen Garlock.

In sadder news, long time SGS member Dr. A.M. Denton Jr. recently died at the age of 73 in Boone, NC. He was professor and chair of the Sociology Department at Appalachian State University for many years.
