About This Guide

This guide is a service of the UNC Institute on Aging Information Center. It was developed to assist NC faculty in aging in finding videos for classroom use.

'Real Time': Videos and Webcasts Online

UCSD-TV Video on Demand: Health and Medicine: Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging (SIRA)
Series of videos of varying lengths on aging-related health topics, viewable over the Internet.

GeriaFlix & GeriaTrax
From the University of Iowa. Learn about a variety of geriatric healthcare issues, from experts in many specialties, with these archived presentations from the Geriatric Grand Rounds lecture series. Delivered using streaming digital video and/or audio with synchronized slides.

Sage Crossroads
Sage is an online forum on aging produced by Science Magazine and the Alliance for Aging Research, featuring webcasts on public policy and aging. Upcoming webcasts are announced here, and the archive of previous webcasts includes transcripts available to view or print.

U.S. Administration on Aging: Video Gallery
Small site containing just a few online video clips.

HealingWell.com: Healthy Aging
Video webcasts are available on a variety of aging-related health topics.

Searching for Videos to Borrow from NC Libraries

UNC-CH IOA: AgeLib Digital Library
From the drop-down selections in the 'find' box, choose 'audiovisuals'. Hit 'submit search' for the entire selection, or type in a subject or title keyword for greater precision.

UNC-CH House Library: FilmFinder
This link runs a query for films cataloged in the 'age/aging' genre.

UNC-CH Health Sciences Library: 2 finding guides
Focus on Geriatrics Audio-Visuals
Focus on Death and Dying Audio-Visuals

UNC-CH Libraries Catalog: Advanced Search
Select 'Video/DVD, etc.' from the drop-down menu for 'Material Type'. Also includes links to Duke, NC State, NCCU, and UNCG library catalogs.

North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (NC AHECs)
This link allows you to search one specific library, or all libraries at NC's regional AHECs simultaneously, for relevant videos. Limit to the format 'Videocassettes'.

Other University And Public Libraries
Your university library catalog allows you to search for audiovisuals for on-campus borrowing. The public library in your locale may have videos of interest for aging education.

Videos to Rent or Purchase

University of North Texas Media Library: Film & Video Collection on Aging
Videos are available to rent by mail for institutional/classroom showing and inservice education.

Video Press: University of Maryland School of Medicine
Produces and distributes video programs for professionals and students in the field of geriatric health care. Rental or purchase available.

AARP AgeLine database
Select 'AgeLine Advanced Search,' insert subject terms if desired, scroll down and choose 'video' in the 'document type' menu. Each record will provide a link to the organization which produced the video.

American Bar Association
A short list of videos available for a modest price, covering various topics pertinent to the rights of the elderly.

DocuSeek Film & Video Finder
A search site for independent documentary, social issue, and educational videos available in the U.S. and Canada. Try a keyword search, or use the 'advanced search' section to search from a pre-defined list of subjects, for title words, or limit by length, format type, etc. Each record provides a link to the film's distributor.

Terra Nova Films: Videos on Aging
Terra Nova Films produces and distributes videos dealing exclusively with aging and elderhood. Over 300 titles available for rental or purchase.

Fanlight Productions: Aging
A leading distributor of films and videos that address social issues. Available for rental or purchase.

First Run Icarus Films
A leading distributor of documentary film and video. Search by title or from a pre-defined list of subjects, such as 'aging' and 'death and dying.' Available for rental or purchase.

New Day Films: Aging
Offers independently produced films and videos that educate and inspire. Available for rental or purchase.

Aquarius Health Care Media
The 'Aging/Gerontology' subject area includes Alzheimer's Disease, bereavement, caregiving concerns and issues, disability issues, exercise and fitness, long term care issues, mental health, strokes, and wellness. Videos for sale.

Sources of Video Reviews

The Gerontologist: Audiovisual Reviews
Archived online issues of The Gerontologist with a/v reviews. Choose a year and an issue to view each table of contents, and click on 'audiovisual reviews.'

Aging and the Cinema
Provides brief synopses of a substantial list of popular films which all deal with aging in some way.

Intergenerational Relationships in Feature-Length Films: 1970-1995
Ratings are based on the quality of the intergenerational relationships portrayed in the films.
