About This Guide

This guide is a service of the UNC Institute on Aging Information Center.
It was developed to assist NC faculty in aging in finding videos for classroom use.

'Real Time': Videos and Webcasts Online

PBS.org and UNC-TV
At these public television sites, use the search box at the top of the page to enter simple terms such as "aging" or "alzheimer" to retrieve a list of video recording and transcript links on your topic of interest.

NCLive.org
For North Carolina public library or academic library users with access to NC Live, use the "Browse By Type" feature to select "video", then use the search box to enter a subject of interest such as "aging" or "retirement".

UCSD-TV Video on Demand: Health and Medicine: Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging (SIRA)
Series of videos of varying lengths on aging-related health topics, viewable over the Internet.

GeriaFlix & GeriaTrax
From the University of Iowa. Learn about a variety of geriatric healthcare issues, from experts in many specialties, with these archived presentations from the Geriatric Grand Rounds lecture series. Delivered using streaming digital video with synchronized slides.

Sage Crossroads Sagecasts
Sage is an online forum on aging produced by Science Magazine and the Alliance for Aging Research, featuring webcasts on public policy and aging. Upcoming webcasts are announced here, and the archive of previous webcasts includes transcripts available to view or print.

HealingWell.com: Healthy Aging
Video webcasts are available on a variety of aging-related health topics.

Searching for Videos to Borrow from NC Libraries

UNC-CH IOA: AgeLib Digital Library
From the drop-down selections in the 'find' box, choose 'audiovisuals'. Hit 'submit search' for the entire selection, or type in a subject or title keyword for greater precision.

UNC-CH House Library: FilmFinder
This link runs a query for films cataloged in the 'age/aging' genre.

UNC-CH Health Sciences Library: 2 finding guides
Focus on Geriatrics Audio-Visuals
Focus on Death and Dying Audio-Visuals

UNC-CH Libraries Catalog: Advanced Search
Select 'Videos and DVDs' from the drop-down menu for 'Format', and use keywords to narrow your search.

North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (NC AHECs) Library Catalogs
Limit your search to the format 'Visual Material' in the AHEC catalogs and 'Video' in the university library catalogs.

Other University And Public Libraries
Your university library catalog allows you to search for audiovisuals for on-campus borrowing. The public library in your locale may have videos of interest for aging education.

Produces and distributes video programs for professionals and students in the field of geriatric health care. Rental or purchase available.

American Bar Association
A short list of videos available for a modest price, covering various topics pertinent to the rights of the elderly.

Filmakers Library
A collection of documentary films for classroom rental as well as purchase. Many topics available, including Aging/Gerontology and Death and Dying.

Terra Nova Films: Videos on Aging
Terra Nova Films produces and distributes videos dealing exclusively with aging and elderhood. Over 300 titles available for rental or purchase.

A leading distributor of documentary film and video. Search by title or from a pre-defined list of subjects, such as 'aging' and 'death and dying.' Available for rental or purchase.

Sources of Video Reviews

The Gerontologist: Audiovisual Reviews
Archived online issues of The Gerontologist with a/v reviews. Choose a year and an issue to view each table of contents, and click on 'audiovisual reviews.'

Aging and the Cinema
Provides a substantial list of popular films which all deal with aging in some way. A selected group of recommended titles includes cast and summary information.
