Training Activities

The Center for Aging and Diversity supports the training of graduate and post-doctoral students who are interested in aging and diversity issues.

Training and Mentoring

Through National Institute on Aging (NIA) funding, Dr. Dilworth-Anderson received a KO7 Leadership Award (2004-2009) to support training and mentoring at the Center. The Research Working Group on Minority Aging in Later Life was created as the major vehicle for training and mentoring. The group meets monthly for two hours for each meeting. A strong mix of senior and junior faculty and pre and post-doctoral students comprise the group, representing a range of disciplines and schools on the UNC campus. Meetings average 15 members, with the majority being minority junior scholars. At least 3 senior scholars attend each meeting. Several topics are discussed during the monthly meetings such as grant writing, building networks, and developing strategies and planning for success in the academy. Outside experts to the UNC campus are guest at some of these meeting to bring additional information and expert advice to the group. The group uses email and a 'Blackboard' website to facilitate communication on meeting notes, research articles, other related research information.

In honor of her mentoring work over the years, Dr. Dilworth-Anderson received the 2006 Gerontological Society of America Minority Task Force Outstanding Mentorship Award.

Writing Day

The Center sponsors a regular Writing Day where graduate and post-doctoral students collaborate on manuscripts and get support for their writing projects. The group critiques, reviews and creates manuscripts (both journal articles and book chapters) for publication. In between meetings, the group communicates electronically through a shared network. For more information, contact Peggye Dilworth-Anderson.
