PILOT GRANT AWARD ANNOUnCEMENT

The Center for Aging and Diversity, Institute on Aging, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is pleased to announce a call for three pilot grant proposals, for a maximum of $20,000 each and funded by an NIH K07 Leadership Award, on issues related to minority aging and health disparities in later life. The purpose of this call for proposals is to encourage small-scale pilot research projects that can be completed within 12-18 months and have the potential to lead to a larger federally or foundation funded award application.

Eligibility

Principal investigator must be a junior faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Budget Guidelines

The Center for Aging and Diversity anticipates awarding three pilot grants for a maximum of $20,000 each. Award funds may be used for data collection, mailing of surveys, analyses of any type of intervention, or for other resources necessary to complete the project. However, award funds may not be used to pay for clinical patient care, for the purchase of computer hardware, food or investigator travel to conferences or meetings.

Proposal Guidelines

The proposal should be a maximum of eight double spaced pages:

Title Page

  • Project title
  • Name, professional title, department, address, work telephone number(s), e-mail address and fax number
  • Abstract

Research Plan

  • Specific aims and rationale; clearly indicate how the proposed study addresses a minority aging and/or health disparity issue
  • Background and significance
  • Research design and methods including:
    • Study population
    • Data collection & measurement
    • Analysis plan
  • Summary including:
    • Strengths and limitations
    • Significance
    • Relevance to minority aging and health disparities in later life
  • Proposed project timeline
  • Brief human subjects section; however, IRB approval is not required prior to submission

In addition to the above proposal contents (and not to be included in the word count), applicants are to provide:

  • A list of references cited in the proposal
  • Budget and budget justification
  • NIH Biosketch

Review Criteria

Included in the consideration of merit are:
1) Relevance of the proposed study to minority aging and health disparities in later life
2) Substantive or methodological significance and uniqueness of the work
3) Soundness of the proposed methods
4) Feasibility of accomplishing the stated goals of the project
5) Potential for fostering further research in minority aging and health disparities
6) Potential for leading to additional external funding

Funded Investigator Responsibilities

All pilot award recipients are required to:

(a) Complete training in ethical conduct of research and protection of subjects

(b) Obtain IRB approval prior to the conduct of the research and file a copy of that approval at the Center for Aging and Diversity

(c) Conduct the research as proposed and further directed by reviewers' comments

(d) Manage their budgets and expend the grant funds in an appropriate and effective manner

(e) Submit a six-month progress report and a final report

(f) Acknowledge Center for Aging and Diversity as a funding source on all related manuscripts and presentations
