Peter J. Stein, PhD

Scientist

Dr. Peter J. Stein is a Scientist at the Institute on Aging.

Born in Prague, Czech Republic, Stein received his B.A. from City College, CUNY, and his doctorate in sociology from Princeton University. He pursued a career in sociology at Rutgers University, Lehman College-CUNY and at Wm. Paterson University in New Jersey where he taught a number of undergraduate and graduate courses including Sociology of the Family, Sociology of the Life Course, Contemporary Issues in the Workplace, Sex and Gender in Modern Society, and the Sociology of Genocide and the Holocaust. He served as co-Director of the University's Genocide and Holocaust Studies Center and Director of Graduate Studies in Sociology.

Stein is the author and co-author of the following books: The Essential Sociologist; Sociology (five editions); The Family: Functions, Conflicts and Symbols; The Marriage Game: Decision Making in Marriages; Single Life: Unmarried Adults in Social Context; and Single. Stein was a research associate with the Canadian Aging Research Network in Toronto and a research associate at the Families and Work Institute in New York. He has presented papers at various regional, national, and international conferences on the changing workforce, work and family issues, corporate human resource policies, and elder care. He has also led a number of diversity training workshops on issues of race, ethnicity, gender and aging for New York and New Jersey based corporations and organizations.

Peter Stein is past Vice-President of the Eastern Sociological Society, Chair of the Family Division of the Society for the Study of Social Problems, Chair of the Teaching Sociology Section and Council member of the Section on Sex and Gender of the American Sociological Association. Currently, he is on the Editorial Board of the Sociological Forum.
