John C. Scott, JD, PhD

Scientist

John Scott is a Scientist at the Institute on Aging as well as an Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research interests stem from his prior work experience as a tax attorney and a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. John’s research explored the social networks of lobbyists and social activists, the pattern of transitions from work to retirement by older workers, and the processes of wealth stratification at the older ages. His dissertation research explored the role of trust-based norms of cooperation and reciprocity among a community of pension lobbyists and the effects of such norms on policy development and democratic participation.

John Scott is a graduate of Swarthmore College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He also received his law degree from the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University. John obtained his Masters in Sociology from the University of Maryland at College Park and his doctorate in Sociology from Cornell University.
