On the state level, Ellen helped to initiate the North Carolina’s Falls Prevention Coalition, currently manages the Coalition, and chairs the Advocacy for Supportive Policies and Environments Committee. In partnership with the Carolina Geriatric Education Center (CGEC) and the NC Division of Public Health, she conducted workshops across the state last spring in falls prevention awareness and capacity-building, and in the fall, conducted workshops to advance falls prevention policy in the state. She is under contract with the CGEC to work on falls prevention infrastructure building in North Carolina and to support efforts to link clinical practice with community-based services. Also through her CGEC work, Ellen is on the Steering Committee of the newly-formed NC Mental Health and Aging Coalition to focus attention on the mental health needs of older adults, build community capacity, and support advocacy and action. Ellen Caylor Schneider is a Scientist at the University of North Carolina’s Institute on Aging at Chapel Hill. Her areas of focus include falls prevention, healthy aging, evidence-based health promotion, and civic engagement. Ellen is a consultant with the National Council on Aging (NCOA), facilitates the national Falls Prevention Awareness and Advocacy Committee, and represents the states on the national Falls Free Advocacy Workgroup. She has worked extensively with State Health Departments and the aging services network across the country to build infrastructure and implement falls prevention policy and programming. Through her work with NCOA, she is also deeply involved in advancing evidence-based health promotion programming through the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, Older Americans Act, and other policy initiatives.
