James Mitchell, Ph.D.

Senior Research Scientist

portraitJim Mitchell is a Senior Research Scientist at the UNC Institute on Aging. He is also Professor of Sociology and Family Medicine and Director of the Center on Aging at East Carolina University.

Jim is from International Falls on the Minnesota-Northwest Ontario border. He joined the Sociology faculty of East Carolina University in 1980. While completing his Ph.D. at Oklahoma State University, Jim was a Pre-Doctoral Fellow of the Midwest Council for Social Research on Aging. He holds a joint appointment as Professor of Sociology and Family Medicine at East Carolina University. Jim’s research focus is health care use among rural older adults in Eastern North Carolina with emphasis upon inequality by race in health outcomes.

He has directed or co-directed numerous projects including primary data gathered from over 8,000 community-dwelling older adults. His sources of external support include the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Kate B. Reynolds Health Care Trust, the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer institute, and the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command. He has published in the Journals of Gerontology: SOCIAL SCIENCES, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Social Science and Medicine, the American Journal of Public Health, the Journal of Applied Gerontology, the Journal of Women’s Health, Research on Aging, the Journal of Surgery, and the Journal of Agromedicine. Jim is a GSA Fellow, Founding Fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, Founding Fellow of the Institute, and president of the Southern Gerontological Society.
