Joanne Gard Marshall

Senior Scientist

Dr. Marshall is a Co-Lead of the Workforce Aging Program and a Senior Scientist at the IOA. She is Principal Investigator of two projects: Workforce Issues in Library and Information Science (WILIS) and the Value of Library and Information Services in Patient Care http://nnlm.gov/mar/about/value.html. Joanne is also Co-Investigator of the Workforce Aging in the New Economy (WANE) project.

Dr. Marshall joined the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) as Dean and Professor in January 1999. In July 2004, she returned to the faculty as an Alumni Distinguished Professor where she teaches courses in health information, research methods and cultural institutions. Prior to her arrival at UNC, Joanne was a faculty member at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto. Joanne’s earlier career was in medical librarianship. She received a B.A. from the University of Calgary; an M.H.Sc. from McMaster University; an M.L.S. from McGill University; and a PhD from the University of Toronto. In 2005 Joanne was awarded an honorary doctorate by McGill University. Her areas of research interest include workforce aging; evidence-based library and information practice; health information needs and services; and the value and impact of library and information services.

Joanne is author of numerous library and information science (LIS) publications. She is Past President of the Medical Library Association (MLA) and a Fellow of both MLA and the Special Libraries Association.
