Malcolm Cutchin, PhD

Senior Scientist

Dr. Malcolm Cutchin is a Senior Scientist at the IOA. He is also a Professor in the Division of Occupational Science, in the Department of Allied Health Sciences, School of Medicine and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geography at UNC. He received a BA in Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and a MA and PhD in Geography at the University of Kentucky. He previously held appointments at Middlebury College (Geography) and the University of Texas Medical Branch (Occupational Therapy and Sealy Center on Aging).

Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, Dr. Cutchin’s aging research focuses on older adults’ relationships with place and the processes that enhance well-being in lifecourse and housing transitions. His research has been funded by the National Institute on Aging and the National Cancer Institute, and he has published in journals such as the Journal of Gerontology Social Sciences, Social Science and Medicine, Health & Place, Progress in Human Geography, International Journal of Aging and Human Development, Journal of Cross-cultural Gerontology, and Journal of Housing for the Elderly. He recently served 4 years as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Gerontology.
