MissionThe North Carolina General Assembly created the Institute on Aging in August 1996, placed it under the general umbrella of the 16-campus University of North Carolina System and based it at the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The Institute's mission is to enhance the well-being of older people in North Carolina by fostering state-wide collaboration in research, education, and service. Its mandate is to:
The IOA is positively affecting the well-being of North Carolina older adults through numerous projects and programs. Many of the IOA’s initiatives integrate research, education, and/or service to address our mission of enhancing the well-being of older people in North Carolina.
