Why Make a Gift?

The Institute on Aging is an inter-institutional program that was established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1996 to promote statewide collaboration in education, research and service in aging. Our goal is to enhance the well being of older North Carolinians. This ambitious mission requires that we pull together to work cooperatively and pool our limited resources to achieve the greatest advances in our knowledge about aging and the best ways to provide services to older adults that are cost-efficient and successful.

This mission also requires that we engage the campus and community in preparing a well-trained workforce that can meet the increasing demands of our rapidly growing older adult population. Accordingly, we have steadily built a statewide network of public and private educational institutions, state and local governmental units, the business sector, the health and human services sector, and senior advocacy groups. Together, we share our unique perspectives and our collective state of the art expertise to respond to the needs and issues of our diverse community of elders.

Your support can make a remarkable difference, helping the Institute and its partners continue and expand our mission and ultimately, help to enhance the quality of life of older North Carolinians and their families.

Fund-Raising Priorities

What your funding can support:

Students: Internship stipends and special awards to attract students from diverse backgrounds to the field of aging; master and doctoral fellowships to support the best and brightest students to train for careers in aging; international student fellowships; and senior leadership training internships to help seniors become a resource to their communities.

Faculty: Endowed professorships to attract established experts and promising newcomers to teach and conduct research in North Carolina; stipends for visiting scholars of national and international renown to provide lectures to professional and lay audiences throughout the state; and support for advanced training in aging research for faculty who are dedicated to improving the quality of life of older North Carolinians.

The Institute: Gerontological and geriatric publications, service directories, and electronic materials to help build the IOA Information Center into the state's premier clearinghouse for aging information; information dissemination and outreach activities to educate and prepare our businesses, health care systems, and other members of the community to meet the challenges of our current older population and our rapidly growing population of aging baby boomers; and special research, education and public service projects unique to the aging issues in North Carolina and the southeast region.

Unrestricted Support: The IOA welcomes undesignated gifts that will enhance our flexibility in developing timely programs that respond to critical state needs that are newly evolving or of an emergency nature. For example, we need your support to launch projects similar to our special campus-county service and research projects that we established in 1999 to study the impact of hurricanes and flooding on older adults living in eastern North Carolina.

Memorial Gifts: Honor someone special by making a memorial gift to the Institute in their name. Memorial gifts can be designated for a specific project or can be unrestricted.
